Following his escape, Mason joins a "Black Ops" team featuring comrades Frank Woods and Joseph Bowman. Their missions take them to diverse locations including Vietnam , Hong Kong , and the Soviet Union to hunt down Dragovich and stop the Nova 6 threat. Following his escape, Mason joins a "Black Ops"

While in prison, Mason befriends Viktor Reznov , a former Soviet soldier. Together, they lead a massive prisoner uprising. Reznov helps Mason escape, but he also "programs" Mason to seek revenge against those who betrayed Reznov in the past: Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner.

The game begins with Mason strapped to a chair, being subjected to electroshock as his captors demand to know the meaning of the numbers he hears.
