The film serves as a powerful allegory for the history of colonization and the residential school system in North America.
Set in the year 2043, North America is under military occupation. Children are considered property of the State and are forced into military institutions. The story follows Niska, a Cree woman who joins an underground resistance to rescue her daughter, Waseese, from a state-run academy.
