The story begins with Dasha Vasilieva and her family spending a weekend at a horse farm owned by their friends, the Vereshchagins. There, they meet a wealthy couple, the Kayurovs. Dasha recalls that only six months prior, the couple was impoverished and Lena Kayurova appeared mentally unstable. The plot thickens when: Lena is found dead in her horse's stall.

While authorities suspect the horse, the farm owner believes Lena was murdered and asks Dasha to investigate.
