The song's enduring influence led to the 2019 film Last Christmas , which was inspired by Michael’s lyrics and received his blessing before his passing on Christmas Day in 2016.

In December 2024, marking its 40th anniversary, the song made history by becoming the first track to occupy the UK festive No. 1 slot for two consecutive years. 3. Legacy and "The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"

Upon its original release, it was famously held at No. 2 by Band Aid’s "Do They Know It’s Christmas?" (which Michael also performed on).

In February 1984, while visiting his parents with bandmate Andrew Ridgeley , Michael disappeared to his childhood bedroom for an hour. He emerged having written the introduction and the wistful chorus melody.
