Released in 2022, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 served as a standalone sequel to the 2007 cult classic, successfully revitalizing the horror-comedy genre in Bollywood during a period of cinematic uncertainty. Directed by Anees Bazmee, the film moved away from the psychological depths of its predecessor, opting instead for a more supernatural and slapstick approach. While it shared the iconic name and the legendary character of Manjulika, the film carved out its own identity, blending folklore with modern humor to appeal to a contemporary audience.

The film’s production design and music also played crucial roles in its reception. The sprawling haveli, with its dusty corridors and cobwebbed portraits, provided an atmospheric backdrop that honored the gothic tropes of the genre. Pritam’s musical score, particularly the reimagined title track and the haunting "Ami Je Tomar," acted as a bridge between the nostalgia of the original and the energy of the sequel. These elements, combined with Anees Bazmee’s signature brand of chaotic humor, ensured that the movie remained engaging even when the plot followed predictable beats.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was more than just a commercial hit; it was a significant cultural moment for the Indian film industry post-pandemic. It proved that audiences were eager for high-concept entertainers that balanced scares with laughs. By merging the legend of Manjulika with a modern narrative structure and a charismatic lead, the film successfully bridged the gap between two generations of cinema lovers. It remains a testament to the enduring power of the horror-comedy genre and the importance of star power backed by an entertaining, fast-paced script.

The story follows Ruhaan Randhawa, played by Kartik Aaryan, a charismatic wanderer who meets Reet Thakur, portrayed by Kiara Advani, during a chance encounter. Their journey leads them to Reet’s ancestral home, a sprawling, eerie mansion in Rajasthan that has been abandoned for eighteen years due to the malevolent spirit of Manjulika. Ruhaan, assuming the persona of "Rooh Baba" to hide Reet's presence from her family, inadvertently becomes a psychic medium for the household. The narrative takes a sharp turn when the myth of the spirit becomes a terrifying reality, forcing the characters to confront a dark family secret hidden within the locked rooms of the estate.

Kartik Aaryan’s performance was a central pillar of the film’s success. Stepping into a franchise previously defined by Akshay Kumar was no small feat, yet Aaryan brought a fresh, youthful energy to the screen. His comic timing and ability to break the fourth wall created a rapport with the audience that kept the momentum high. However, the film truly found its emotional and horrific core in Tabu. Playing a dual role, Tabu delivered a masterclass in acting, seamlessly transitioning between vulnerability and chilling malice. Her presence elevated the film from a standard comedy to a genuine thriller, providing the gravitas needed to make the supernatural elements feel stakes-heavy.
