Everything changes when Lola, a Spanish flamenco teacher and a friend of his mother, comes to stay for the Christmas holidays. Lola is vibrant, passionate, and fiercely independent—the polar opposite of Hlynur’s frozen existence. Despite his initial disdain, Hlynur finds himself drawn to her. One drunken night, while his mother is away, Hlynur and Lola have a sexual encounter.

Hlynur is a thirty-year-old man living in the heart of Reykjavik, Iceland. He exists in a state of perpetual adolescence, spending his days on government benefits, surfing the internet for pornography, and drinking at the local "Kaffibarinn." He still lives with his mother, Berglind, in their cramped apartment at postal code 101, the city's trendy yet cold center.
